The mission of the Centre for Food Policy is to advance an integrated and inclusive approach to food policy that works for everyone, through education, research, and engagement with the world of food policy. The Centre is interdisciplinary and located in the School of Health Sciences, at City, University of London.
The Food Research Collaboration (FRC) is based at the Centre for Food Policy, and funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. Founded in 2014, it aims to catalyse change by making academic knowledge accessible to campaigners, policy-makers and entrepreneurs working for nature-friendly, healthy and equitable food systems. It sees collaboration among diverse stakeholders as a way to broker knowledge, improve understanding and overcome barriers to change in the food system. In its next phase of work, FRC will look at three key challenges – Covid-19, Brexit and climate change – and produce and communicate evidence to strengthen sustainable food systems through these turbulent times, with a focus on the needs of sustainable small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) in the food sector.
To help achieve these goals, FRC is seeking to appoint a curious and rigorous part-time Research Assistant. The successful candidate will play a key role in planning and conducting the research needed to substantiate and strengthen the role that SMEs can play in sustainable food systems, and highlight the importance of supportive policy.
The post-holder will assist with all aspects of the project, including planning, literature and policy reviews, fieldwork, data analysis, preparation of publications and other outputs, contribution to events, and dissemination. Where fieldwork involves interviewing, this will take place remotely, as necessary.
The successful applicant must have a Master’s degree relevant to food sustainability or food business sustainability, plus knowledge of the UK sustainable food sector and UK food policy. Experience of planning and conducting research, analyzing findings and producing effective, clearly written outputs is essential.
This is an excellent post for an individual with a background in food sustainability or food business sustainability, a strong interest in policy-focused qualitative research and a good knowledge of current affairs. It will provide opportunities to conduct fieldwork and produce outputs across a range of topics at the cutting edge of food policy.
